Sunday, March 21, 1999 - Without Jamie in net, the Cobras had
to rely on offense alone as a means of beating the 7th place Sabres.
Due to unforseen problems, Cobra Goaltender Jamie could not make it
to the game. The Cobras (9-0-0) were forced to play a sixth man in net, but countered
the handicap by playing four forwards. The result was an offensive
smorgasbord, during which the Sabres (3-6-1) could only muster 6 shots on net.
Fearing the unthinkable (a loss), the Cobras came out firing, intent on building
a massive lead early, to offset the massive hole where their goalie should be.
Through three periods, it was all Cobras, dominating the rink at both ends
and setting up a continuous shooting gallery on the Sabres netminder.
When asked about the unusual course of events, Team Captain Vroom said "We might
have used more defensemen, but with four forwards, we control the flow of the game.
It's like having a 60 minute powerplay. Naturally we let a few in that we couldn't
have stopped, but we didn't give them many chances at all."
When confronted after the game, Sabres Goaltender said "This game was obviously
a goaltenders' duel. I tried as hard as I could to keep my team in it but they
couldn't get anything past him! I can't see the other end of the rink very clearly,
but he must be one hell of a goalie."
He sure is.
